The Double
Rating: 2.7 out of 5

Richard Gere plays Paul Shepherdson, a retired CIA operative who is called back from retirement to solve the mystery behind a senator’s murder.  He is joined by a young FBI agent (Topher Grace) to unravel this mysterious murder – a murder with the same characteristics of a former Russian assassin named “Cassius”.

The acting duo, Richard Gere and Topher Grace, work surprisingly well together.  I know there’s a lot of Topher Grace haters out there (mainly because of Spider-man 3), but I’ve always liked him – and he was terrific in this role… a role in which he steps slightly over his boundary into a character he’s never quite played before.  And although there’s twenty-nine years between the two of them, their chemistry was great.  And of course it’s great to see Richard Gere in a decent role again.

The story was fine.  Nothing really to brag about, but when the credits came up – I was still satisfied with what I saw.  It was slightly predictable, but I don’t think it was ever boring.  Although I knew where it was going to end up, I still wanted to finish it and see how it got there.  Sure there were a couple twists along the way, but nothing amazing and nothing award winning.

The Bottom Line: I thought Richard Gere and Topher Grace were the perfect choices for these roles.  I like to see Topher taking on slightly larger and harder roles, and it’s great to see Richard Gere again.  The story was good, but not great.  Still a pretty good thriller to rent on a Friday evening.
