Steel
Rating: 3.2 out of 5

I, like many others, was very hesitant when it came to watching Steel.  It's not that it's a bad character to base a movie on, but the fact that Shaquille O'Neal is the man behind the steel is enough to drive just about anyone away.

Being the Superman fan that I am it's easy to scrutinize and nitpick every little flawed detail about the character and circumstances found in this film; so I sat myself down with the anticipation of being let down.  To my surprise the film wasn't a total waste of my time; sure, it's not one of the best superhero movies ever made, but it's definitely not the worst either.  Surprisingly Shaq wasn't terrible to watch, and he actually looked and felt as if he were Steel; like the character was created for him to play.  He may not be the most polished actor in the film, but he definitely surprised me throughout the whole movie.

Of course when making a movie about Steel and the DC Universe; you can't really make a Steel movie without at least mentioning Superman - without Superman there would have been no Steel.  It's as if they tried to create a brand new character using the same basic character traits all while erasing some of the key elements that made him who he is.

Overall, Steel kept me entertained and awake.  Would I run out to buy the DVD, no... but at least check it out.

John Henry Irons designs weapons for the military. When his project to create weapons that harmlessly neutralize soldiers is sabotaged, he leaves in disgust. When he sees gangs are using his weapons on the street, he uses his brains and his Uncle Joe's junkyard know-how to fight back, becoming a real man of "steel."
