I am a lifetime long Star
Trek fan, and as such am honored to be reviewing the best video game vision of the epic series. That said
I did not believe this to be above the bar for next-gen video games. The basic overlook of Star Trek: Legacy
is that you will control a federation fleet throughout the timeline of the series (from Enterprise, ST:OS STTNG, STDS9STV,
respectively). Throughout this enormous timeline you will control not only the legendary ships Enterprise,
Voyager, Defiant and such but a multitude of other ships and classes. In addition you will control non-federation
vessels in skirmish matches over Xbox-Live. The Good: The graphics for the individual
ships is nothing short of dead on! I have original casts of some of these vessels with my own eyes and
the ships Gene Roddenberry envisioned so many years ago are done great justice in Star Trek: Legacy. The
contributions from all of the commanding officers in Star Trek: Legacy made the game mover much more smoothly.
Voice acting from William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, and Scott Bakula made this game worth
a play through by any true Trek fan gamer. Furthermore, you can purchase new craft, upgrade current ships,
and you can shift from ship to ship to command them directly if the need arises. Simply being able to fire
phasers or photon torpedoes from the legendary NCC- 1701 (no A,B,C, or Z required!) makes this game a complete geek fantasy.
The Bad:
I hate
to have more bad to talk about than good but I really can’t help it with a game that could be improved upon so vastly.
First off the mission setup was almost entirely set up for a fast paced space fighter, but Star Trek: Legacy is a fleet
based command strategy/action game! It is almost impossible at times to get your units to react quickly
to commands when your missions put you in a tight situation. Second, the reaction and handling of these
ships seems much too sluggish, even high speeds of warp don’t seem to show much in the way of speed. Lastly,
the missions you are assigned throughout the entire game, regardless of the era, seem repetitive and can get tedious (i.e.
gather or escort missions). My
final word: It was great to see my favorite ships blast through space and do their thing, however there
times where blasting through empty space was all I wanted to do. For those out there who love fleet style
combat Star Trek: Legacy translates well to space fleet combat. For those of you who remember the action
packed suspenseful battles from the shows, Star Trek: Legacy just doesn’t deliver. Warp Speed, disengaged.
