Interview with Shaun from Soil
October 2001
by Tim Nydell

Let’s start off by telling me a little about Soil.

Soil - it’s basically heavy modern rock - but at the same time we’re trying to keep it traditional. We’re trying to incorporate what’s modern without losing... our goal is to make a heavy rock band. That’s basically what it’s about.

What is the difference between the first album and the newest one?

Um... Time. (Laughs) We took a lot more time to horn in on our song writing, and concentrating on tones and ideas... new sounds to bring into the songs. On the first album, those are probably the first twelve songs the band wrote for an album - we didn’t really pick too much. With Scars we had a lot - we made sure that we were real proud of each song on that album.... they represent what this band should be about.

Last night was your first show with Ozzy and Rob (Zombie)?

Yeah, last night was the kick off. It was awesome, everyone’s treating us really good - everyone seems to be aware of who Soil is... and last night we got a lot of new fans. The show went really smooth. It’s great to play such large crowds. It’s an honor to play with Ozzy.

I read that the new album debuted at number ten on Billboard’s Heatseeker’s chart...

Yeah, I just heard about that.

Yeah, and Halo’s a top twenty hit on rock radio... how does that make you guys feel?

It makes us feel proud that obviously we’re doing something that people are grabbing on to. In my eyes, we’ve only just begun... there’s a lot of work ahead of us. It’s an accomplishment... I’m happy.

Do you see a change in your next album?

I don’t know. It will be a natural progression - I don’t think we’ll stray too far away from Scars. I suppose we’ll always have new ideas - I think Scars is a great representation of what we are. Right now our focus is on touring our balls off.

What are some of your favorite rock or metal groups out now?

I like Sevendust - I like Machinehead ... I like The Cure. Stuff like that - I’m open minded. I don’t listen to too much dance music or rap. I like Deftones.
