For those who aren't familiar, or who haven't played the demo, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is
the puzzle solving tale of Guybrush Threepwood. The game opens with Guybrush in a dire situation, the pirate LeChuck has taken
Elaine captive, holding her on his pirate ship. While you (Guyrbush) posses most of the equipment to save her, you must locate
a couple necessary components to enchant your cutlass and kill LeChuck. In classic gaming panache, your enchantment fails
and you must board LeChuck's deadly pirate ship in search of the components needed to make your enchantment work. You
must concoct a formula, enchant your cutlass and defeat LeChuck.
Launch of the Screamin Narwhal is a definite puzzle thriller, and will challenge you at every
turn. However, there are a couple things you might want to be aware of. For you puzzle game enthusiasts this won't matter
much, but I found the plot to be a bit on the corny side and the graphics are on the poor side. I know, I know, I must have
been playing on an old and slow computer, right? Not so my weary gamer, I was playing this on a 3Ghz dual core with 8Gb's
of RAM and a 1GB PCIe video card, more than enough to handle Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Left 4 Dead,
and many other graphics intense games I play at full resolution. The worst part of the game, however, is your complete lack
of ability to control your view. I found it most annoying that you were stuck with one third person view, unable to enter
a first person view or rotate your view in any way to help you see into corners easier. This was a definite deal breaker for
me, it annoyed me to the point that I had trouble concentrating on the game itself.
While the game does have some flaws, serious puzzle solvers will find
a certain amount of satisfaction in the game play. Launch of the Screamin Narwhal isn't for everyone, but it's
game play has a certain attraction to it, and overall I enjoyed my time with it.
