Interview with Lyriq Bent
January 15, 2006
by Tim Nydell

What is it about acting that you love?

Well, it was the opposite.  I was so bad at it.  I thought there was nothing to it - it was the fact that I wasn't very good at it.  And then I developed a love for it and realized - it was like an outlet for you to get your mind off of everything.  It's just doing things that you never thought of doing.  Entertaining people - it's definitely something that grows on you.

Is there a little bit of you in all of the characters you've played - or are you able to change completely for each role?

You know, I really don't know.  I hope - I don't think I'm very interesting of an individual to spend money to watch.  I try to take on the circumstances - I just try to run with what my imagination gets.

I haven't seen Saw II yet - can you tell me a little about it and your character?

You haven't seen Saw II yet - why are we talking?  (laughs)  The second one is twice as good - for two reasons... one, because the story is that much better.  And two, I'm in this one.  (laughs)  It is a better film.  I think they did a great job telling the story and flushing out the captives.

Do you know anything about the third one?

Now you know if I did that I wouldn't tell you.  (laughs)  I know a little bit, but not enough for me to elaborate on.  It's a little pre-mature right now.

What was it like making a horror movie?

Wow, you know it was... I would say it was like any other film.  They shot it in two segments - first one was with all of the actors that were in the house.  So they shot all that was happening in the house seperate from all of the cop scenes.  So it wasn't like I was in a haunted house - in a room with a bunch of blood.  It wasn't like that because once I got on the set all of that was already in the can being worked on in the editing room.  So it was pretty normal.  A lot of new actors think that they shoot the film the way it is in the script, and that's not the case.

Tell me about Skinwalkers.

Skinwalkers is about werewolves.  It's about a 12 year old boy who has a key and secret to the existence of the werewolves.  There's two sets of werewolves - you've got the good guys and the bad guys.  They're trying to kill the kid and we're trying to protect him and keep him alive.  We have to keep him alive until his 13th birthday.

Do you think it's going to be able to compete with Underworld: Evolution?

I've seen some footage of Underworld and I think it's going to blow Underworld out of the water.  For two reasons - I've seen the effects of Underworld and it doesn't come close to how Skinwalkers looks.  Skinwalkers looks real.  Underworld didn't look fake, but it looked computer animated.  In Skinwalkers... the werewolves look sexy.  Especially the females... oh my goodness.  They look great - you can really buy into the fact that werewolves are real because it doesn't look computer generated.  And the story line is good.  There's a love story in there as well - real life situations.  The story is very real.  Do you know much about the background of skinwalkers?

No, not really.

Skinwalkers are Native American.  They didn't turn into werewolves - they were actually real people who wore the skin of wolves.   It wasn't for negative things - it was for chanting... I found that very interesting.

I've seen that you directed a short film - is that an area that you want to explore more of?

Absolutely.  The reason why I did it was because I was out of work and needed something to do.  Yea, it was a twenty minute short... the experience was incredible.  To see what you thought up come together - it gives you a great feeling.  You feel God like because you created something.  I've always wanted to do another one, but it's really time consuming.

What do you plan on doing with the short film?

I'm past that right now.  I've gone to a couple festivals with it - gotten some great responses.  I don't intend to do anything with it anymore.  It's had it's run.  Maybe make a couple more if possible.

What type of movies do you want to be in?

I like to be in movies that does something to peoples emotion.  I'm not against movies that have no real story to it, but my idea movie is one that really shows emotion... and comes with a great message.  When you have a great product people will find their own messages in their own way.  I don't think inspiration is something that should be delivered - I think it's something that happens to someone so they experience their own experience.  But it's got to move the viewer... maybe through laughter or even tears... whatever it is they need to be moved by it.
