Larry Kenney
Second Interview

Larry Kenney is an American radio personality and voice actor.

In 1963, Kenney began his radio career at the age of 15 as a disc jockey at WIRL in Peoria. After WIRL, he worked at WOWO, Ft. Wayne, Indiana; WKYC (AM, now WTAM), Cleveland (1970–1973); WYNY, New York City; WJJD (now WYLL), Chicago; and WKHK (now WLTW), New York City until 1972.

He is also known for his voice work as Lion-O on the 1980s Rankin-Bass cartoon ThunderCats, as well as Karate Kat, a martial arts blackbelt cat featured as part of The Comic Strip. He was also the voice of Bluegrass in SilverHawks. In recent years, he has reprised this role for humorous ThunderCats references on the animated series Family Guy.

Warner Bros. Has finally announced a Thundercats movie.  Do you know if they plan on using the “original voices” from the cartoon like they did for the Transformers movie?  And do you know any information on the movie - for instance, is it live action or animated?  And are you involved?

My agent has been in contact with Warner Brothers concerning the THUNDERCATS movie ... they say they haven't yet discussed casting the voices, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. It will definitely be animated, not live-action. For more details, check out this article in Variety:

There’s also a rumor of a new cartoon, do you know anything about this project?

As for a new THUNDERCATS TV series, I've heard rumors, too, but nothing concrete. My guess is that if the movie does well, WB might consider a new series.

What are you up to these days?

I'm still doing radio and TV commercials ... Cocoa Puffs, Count Chocula, Goodyear Tires, Skittles candy and gum, and others. And I'm the announcer on VH1's "Best Week ver" and on "The Dennis Miller Show," syndicated by estwood One Radio.

Do you ever make any appearances - like comic conventions, etc.? What’s that experience like for you?
I did one convention in New Jersey a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Meeting fans, signing autographs, etc. ... lots of fun. Now that the IMUS show is over and I'm free to travel, I may attend more of them.

Do you have a favorite episode of Thundercats?
I don't really have one favorite episode of T-CATS ... love 'em all!

As the years went by - were you ever given the option to voice your opinion or have any say in any episodes?

We always felt free to offer suggestions about script changes, ideas for scenes or episodes, etc. But since the scripts were written by some of the best writers in the business, there was rarely need to change anything. I remember only a few times during the three-year recording process when I suggested minor revisions ... usually a substitution of one word for another I felt the character would be more likely to use.

What type of television, movies, and music are you into?  Do you have a favorite movie of 2007 yet?
I tend to watch sitcoms, documentaries, and dramas like NYPD BLUE, LAW AND ORDER, etc. on TV. I like most types of movies, with the exception of Horror films. As for music, I'm a Country fan ... Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard,
George Jones, Randy Travis, etc.

Best movie this year?  That's easy ... RENO 911: MIAMI. Probably because my daughter Kerri is one of the stars and co-producer with Danny DeVito.

What do your kids think of your career now that they’re grown up?

My children ... Kerri (37), Ashley (23), and Tanner (19) consider their Dad the handsomest, most talented man in the world. At least I think they do ... I haven't asked them.
