There’s no doubt in my mind that Louis L’Amour can write one hell of a western; so it wasn’t a surprise
to me that these three movies (which are based on the work of Louis L’Amour) are just about equally as good as his stories.
The Louis L’Amour Western Collection consists of three full-length
movies; The Sacketts starring Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot; Catlow starring Yul Brynner, Richard Crenna and Leonard Nimoy (A renegade outlaw wants
to pull off a gold heist but finds it hard because he's such a wanted man); and Conagher starring Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross (a cowhand and a widowed ranch owner who are drawn to each other when ruthless rustlers threaten his livelihood and her
homestead). All three are fair representations
of the material that can be found in the books, and all three are extremely well casted… Sam Elliott should be found
in every western film ever made; his persona is exactly what people think of when they imagine the wild west.
The Sacketts is the standout film in this collection; both Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck give great performances as brothers who migrate west to make their fortunes in cattle-herding
and gold prospecting.
