When did you know that you wanted to be a musician?
I was about 9 when I started playing my older brothers drums. But it wasn’t until about 17 that
I got in my first band and thought "Yeah I like this!"
How did you get together with Bonehead? (the first time)
We were put together by Stone Groove Productions. They held auditions for an alternative cover band in 1993
(Man im getting old) and somehow I got the gig.
Now is Bonehead and Familiar 48 the same band? Is it the same type of music?
Bonehead has been around for sometime, the members changed through the years but Kevin, Scott, Jayy and Nick were the band
Bonehead that had to change there name to Familiar 48 (for legal reasons) Yes, the songs are the same, just a new name.
After Familiar 48 called it quits, why did you decide to start a solo career instead of fronting a band?
Well it was hard enough to just say see ya to the guys I had been friends with and played with for years, but to go find
new band mates wasn’t even on my mind. I had asked Kevin (song writing partner and guitar player from Bonehead and Familiar
48) if he would be interested in working on some new songs I had written while we recording and touring. I didn’t want
to take any ones time when I didn’t know what I was doing so Kev and I started working.
Are the songs going to sound the same on your new cd? Or did your writing change since Fam48?
Well I always hope with every new song we grow a little but as far as changing, I don’t think Im to far away
from were I have always been. The new songs will feel different since the musicians are not the same and we are working
with Jim Cravero who produced "Fade" our first cd that got us signed. He is doing some great things with the new stuff.
We hope you like it.
Tell me about some of the songs you're working on for the solo cd.What are they about? What were you going through? when
you wrote them? Which one is your favorite?
The new songs are from a time different then any other in my life. I had just recorded a major label cd for (Mca/Refuge),
left my wife and kids to go on tour, had lots of good times and tough times in the same day. The ups were as overwhelming
as the downs. Internal problems with band members and lack of support from our label were just a few things that were going
on. Quite a mix of things to write songs about! When Im mad I like "Better to let go" or "Your infection" "Breathing"
and "When you look at me" they are healing songs for me. Sorry if that sounds odd.
Are your songs about a specific person?
No, they are about lots of different people and feelings but some are to be specific about me.
What bands are you listening to now?
Our lady peace, Matchbox, Seether, Chevelle, Goo goo dolls, Tonic are all in the car changer right now. And all the
90’s "Grunge" I can stand. "1210 big talker "Talk radio does that count?
You're also doing shows with Bonehead right now... is it a different Bonehead? Did you put together the band?
Well the Bonehead name is great to use for the cover scene in Philly. Its helping us get the new music out there.
We didn’t want to use it but it made sense because its "familiar" to lots of people around here. It’s a very
different bonehead player wise 3 new guys lots of song learning going on but there doing great.
Do you ever plan on re-joining a band? Or would you like to stay a solo artist?
I like to think even though im using my name, it still a band. The new guys have already started to help us with
recording and I only use Jayy Mannon because I didn’t want the hassle of coming up with a new name. Have any good ideas
for a band name?
So when do you plan on releasing the solo cd? Is it only available online?
Well I wish it was already out but it’s taking more time then we hoped. Staring up Bonehead took a lot of the
little bit of time Kevin and I have. So recording has been slow and steady but we hope to have it done real soon. It
will be for sale online at www.jayymannon.com you can check out some of the songs
right now. We will also see if we can get it on Tower records, Fye, Amazon and other select locations, well have it posted
online.
