Insomnia
Rating: 3.8 out of 5

Christopher Nolan has proven himself time and time again that his work is far superior than anything else coming out of Hollywood these days.  He has struck a chord with audience members with every movie he has been involved with, and I’m not a fanboy who bases my opinion solely on the Batman franchise.  In fact, I feel Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are two of his weaker movies, but both are still deserving of a 4 or a 5 out of 5.  “Insomnia”, even though I really enjoyed it, still falls on the bottom of that list.

Insomnia follows a Los Angeles detective, played by Al Pacino, who arrives in Alaska to investigate a murder of a teenaged girl. Al Pacino was extremely believable as this detective who is suffering from insomnia.  But although he was very believable in this role, I just can’t sit down and enjoy any more Al Pacino roles these days.  In my opinion, he only has two styles of acting: the “Scarface” style or the “Devil’s Advocate” style, that he relies on over and over again.  I’m not saying that he’s a bad actor, no… not at all… he’s terrific, but I’m anxiously waiting a time that we see another side to Mr. Pacino.  That being said, we see a side of Robin Williams that is rarely seen… well, at least before “Insomnia” was made.  I thought Robin Williams was the shining star in the movie, his brilliant acting and reaction to the environment around him was amazing.  Recently I read that Robin Williams wanted to be in the third Batman installment, and after seeing this performance again… I’m really hoping it works out!

Christopher Nolan shines yet again with another brilliant directorial display – especially with the scenes showing us what Al Pacino’s character was going through each and every night he tried to lay his head down to sleep.  The visuals and sounds he chose to display for the audience through such scenes and throughout the film were remarkable.

I may have mislead you with the first paragraph, in no way is this a bad movie, but if you compared all the incredible films by Christopher Nolan [Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Following, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins] this is definitely at the bottom of that list.  But looking at it as another Hollywood movie, it’s a great movie that should definitely get checked out.  Great acting by all, yes… even Al Pacino.  A great storyline that unfolds perfectly, and great direction.

About this flick:

Sent from the city to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in a small Alaska town, a police detective (Pacino) accidentally shoots his own partner while trying to apprehend a suspect. Instead of admitting his guilt, the detective is given an unexpected alibi, but this "solution" only multiplies the emotional complexity and guilt over his partner's death.
