Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Available on: Xbox 360 / Nintendo Wii / Playstation 3
Rating: 3.3 out of 5

With 2010 being a big year for music rhythm games [Rock Band 3, Power Gig, DJ Hero 2], Guitar Hero is back with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.  Is this game worth your investment, or should you just wait for Rock Band 3 to be released?

First off, let me straight out tell you that I am a Rock Band junkie.  And although I highly enjoy most Guitar Hero games, I tend to lean towards Rock Band when company comes over.  I don’t know if it’s the song choices, the fact that there’s a new watered down Guitar Hero game every six months or the game-play itself, Guitar Hero has lost its appeal to me.  That being said, I really enjoyed the time I spent with this game.  Sure, not a lot has changed since the time I played Guitar Hero: Metallica, but for the first time in a long time, this new release finally feels as though it’s a standalone release and not just another clone of a previous title.

In Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock you can join your friends on an epic journey to save rock ‘n roll.  So the biggest change that you will see is that there is actually a story thrown into the game; so instead of just playing different venues and songs you play as a handful of new characters, each with a special power that will definitely help you on your path to save rock ‘n roll.  I can’t say that I actually enjoyed the story itself, but it was nice to have a clear path in the game – and one with different characters wielding a special power that made each song a little more fun to play.  The story, narrated by KISS’ front man Gene Simmons, is quite laughable [as if it was taken straight from the Tenacious D movie], but it was nice having something to work for in the game.

The track list is very strong, 90+ songs can be played upon opening the game.  And the songs that were chosen are equally impressive; it ranges from all sorts of genres – and I highly enjoyed the fact that each character you play has a certain genre of choice.  For instance, you get stereotypical portrayals of a goth chick, a metal head, and a hippy… just to name a few.  Some of the tracks include: “The Outsider” by A Perfect Circle, “Machinehead” by Bush, “Wish” by Nine Inch Nails, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and one of my favorites to play “Ties That Bind” by Alter Bridge.

If you are one of the lucky players to buy the special edition that comes with the all-new redesigned rock-inspired wireless guitar controller, well… you are in for a treat.  This has to be one of my favorite guitars to play with – and it is visually stunning.

With the release of Rock Band 3 [and Rock Band’s new “real guitar”] just around the corner – do I recommend picking this up?  I say this is a definite buy for those of you who aren’t planning on trying out Rock Band 3 – and even for those of you who are.  I honestly think this is the most fun I’ve had playing a Guitar Hero game since Guitar Hero 2 was released a few years back on the Xbox 360.
