Green Zone
Rating: 3.5 out of 5

The duo who brought us the highly successful Bourne movies [The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum] are back together, but this time taking on the controversial war against terror and the search for “weapons of mass destruction”.  Does this war thriller live up to expectations?

Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller [played by Matt Damon] travels the perilous terrain of Iraq in search of “WMD’s”, but each location they hit turns up empty.  Matt Damon goes in search for the truth in Green Zone, a semi-intense and moderately entertaining look at the war.

Don’t let the trailers fool you, the trailers for Green Zone prior to its theatrical release made me believe it was another “Bourne like” movie featuring Matt Damon, in fact the first time I saw the preview I thought that it could be another Bourne sequel [only in the first few seconds] because of the displayed action sequences and the mention of Paul Greengrass [director of Green Zone and The Bourne Supremacy] and Matt Damon.  Don’t let them fool you because this is not in any shape or form a Bourne type of movie, but Green Zone can’t really be placed in the same category… it’s a different type of action.  I’m sure people went into the movie expecting a kick-ass action flick, but instead they get an above average war movie.

Matt Damon pulls off a decent performance.  It may not have been his finest, but it makes it more realistic to see an average guy on the screen, I’m glad his role wasn’t overdone and exaggerated like a lot of war/action movie lead characters.  Also starring is Brendan Gleeson [28 Days Later, In Bruges] as CIA agent Martin Brown and Greg Kinnear [Little Miss Sunshine] as politician Clark Poundstone - both of which pull off amazing performances.

The bottom line: Green Zone pulls off a lot; a strong story backed by a great cast and a different look at the war.  Although I feel that a lot of the action sequences failed to hit home, it’s still a good movie that should definitely be checked out, but you may want to rent it before buying.
