Interview with James Black of Finger Eleven
June 2003
by Tim Nydell

Tell me a little about Finger Eleven.

We got together when we were young, and just fell in love with it.

How old were you guys?

Man, we were about 18 years old.

You used to be called Rainbow Butt Monkeys?

It was sort of a joke name.  We were a cover band.

One of my favorite songs is Awake And Dreaming - what's that song about?

Awake And Dreaming, I believe... I don't know the actual meaning.  I think it's about a line between the dream world and reality.

Have you ever taken guitar lessons or are you self taught?

Yea, I took lessons for about six years.

What do you guys do on the road for entertainment?

We play Halo.  We have two Xbox's wired together.  We have four guys in the front and four guys in the back.  We'll watch a lot of movies... a lot of music.

What are some of your favorite movies to watch?

Big Lebowski.

Do you guys ever get star strucked whenever you see other celebrities?

Yea, definitely.  People that I respect.  Like Red Hot Chili peppers...

On the new record... One Thing... is that about a certain one thing that you guys have in mind... or about anything really?

I would imagine that there's a certain one thing in the lyrics somewhere.  But I have no idea what that would be.

In your songs... are they experiences that you actually went through... or what certain band members have gone through?

I'd say musically... for sure.  It's always personal.

I read an article saying that two of you guys got into a fight in high school... tell me about that.

I wouldn't say that we really got into fights - it was more like tackle football... that kind of rivalry.  Before we actually really knew each other.

You're the one who does all the art on the albums?

Yea.

Have you gone to any art classes in the past?

No - in school I didn't take very much art.

The music seems to go with the art a lot - is that just a coincidence?

It's coming from all the same brain.

Have there every been any thoughts of giving up on the band?

No, we keep surprising ourselves with what we can do.

How are the record sales going for the new album?

They're going well, man.  It's only been out for a week, but our first week was better than the last album's.

How do you prepare for a concert?

Kind of like some lame yoga. (laughs)

What do you do after a concert to settle down?

If there's a shower... that's usually what I do.  I just go right off stage and hit the showers.

What's one question that you hate being asked?

I'm not sure.  It's not a stupid question, but people always ask us what our name stands for.  We've been asked it so many times.  That's the one question that I hear the most.

Why do you think someone would like the new CD?

It's got stuff for everyone.  If you have an open mind... you should enjoy it.
