Interview with Dan Craig of Default
November 2002
by Tim Nydell

What is the meaning behind "Wasting My Time"?
Dan:  It's a song between Dallas and his girlfriend...

I heard it was after a fight?
Dan:  Yea, something like that.

Are they still together?
Dan:  Oh yea, they're still together.  We happened to be making a demo during that time - and that's what came out of him at that time.

What was the video making process like?
Dan:  We definitely learned the ropes of it.  It's different - a step up from touring.  It's definitely hard - you shoot from early hours of the day.

Are you going to make one for "Live A Lie"?
Dan:  Yea, we just did.  It's like an old 70's recording session.  With thirty people standing around - and we're jamming something out.  We're performing but recording at the same time.  They actually used old film to make it look authentic.

Tell me a little about "Live A Lie" - what's it about?
Dan:  Um... I don't know.  (laughs)

So Dallas wrote that one?
Dan:  Yea.  I think it's just how people perceive us - we're just saying that we're regular guys.

How has life changed since forming the band?
Dan:  It's definitely gotten a lot more hectic.  Just really busy.  A lot more to deal with business wise.  It's definitely fun - it's what I wanted to do.

Do you guys ever get nervous on stage?
Dan:  Not any more.  Maybe if we're doing a TV show or something - if it's live to air.

What about Dallas - because I heard he never sang before this band...
Dan:  Yea, he's gotten over it.  When he first got started he definitely - all the rest of us have played in other bands before.  I still get excited from time to time, but never nervous.

How did you guys get involved with the movie Spider-man?
Dan:
That was through our label.  Columbia put out the soundtrack and they were looking for original songs - we had a big single at the time so they asked our label if they had any B-sides that they could throw into the soundtrack.

So it wasn't written for the movie?
Dan:  No, that was the first song we've ever written together.  It was on our independent record.

When is your last show with Creed?
Dan:
  Tonight.

Who are you touring with after that?
Dan:  We're off to tour with Nickelback.

Any plans for a new CD yet?
Dan:  Oh yea.  We've been working the plans to that.  Probably going to take January, February, and March off for that - to write and maybe get into the studio at some point during that time.  Hopefully have the record ready by May or June.  The songs will definitely be more mature - we're happy with what we're coming up with so far.  We have some tricks up our sleeve for the next one.  Couple cool people are going to be involved in it.  It's going to be really good.

Do you play the new songs live?
Dan:  Yea, we do two new tracks live.  I don't know if they'll be on the next record.

I've seen Dallas in a couple teen magazines -  how does he feel about that?
Dan:  We give him shit.  It's our ammo.  It's cool - I'm sure he doesn't mind being called a hot dude or whatever.  He thinks it's funny.

Tell me about your charity.
Dan:  We donate money to animal shelters through a foundation called The Bright Star Foundation.  They're a charity organizer - they pick your charity and you go through them.  We do a couple meet and greets and donate tickets to the shows - they auction them off and raise money for whatever city's shelter we're playing at.  It's really cool.

Did you guys set that up?
Dan:  No, they approached us.  It's really easy to do and we get to help some animals.
