Chillerama is a horror comedy
anthology film that consists of four unrelated stories that may just feed your hunger for this particular genre.
A genre that we don’t see enough of these days.
The main story takes place at an old drive-in that is about
to get closed down. It’s at this drive-in where we are introduced to the main characters of Chillerama
and watch a few mini movies – as if they were watching them at the drive-in itself.
The first mini film is “Wadzilla”.
“Wadzilla” was written and directed by Adam Rifkin – and is a spoof on the early monster movies of
Hollywood. The best part of “Wadzilla” is the fact that it is so over the top.
The main premise of this film is that a guy with low sperm count takes some new medication that is supposed to help
him out – but instead it creates one giant sperm that gets out and grows with a healthy appetite for flesh.
The acting is well placed, the script is well polished and even the camera work is fun. Honestly,
I feel “Wadzilla” was the strongest of the four mini films we see during Chillerama.
The second film we see (shortly after
“Wadzilla” ends) is “I Was a Teenage Werebear” – written and directed by Tim Sullivan.
“I Was a Teenage Werebear” is a spoof of the 1960’s movies like Grease – but with a slight
Twilight twist. I know I’m going to get called out and someone out there will call me a homophobe
(since the whole segment is about a sexually confused teenager who falls in love with a werewolf), but I didn’t
necessarily care for this section of the movie. It had some fun parts to it, but it didn’t
stand out like the others in this collection.
“The Diary of Anne Frankenstein” was third – and is written
and directed by Adam Green – in which he spoofs Hitler and The Diary of Anne Frank. I loved the idea
of this movie, but… I don’t think that it was pulled off. It seemed a little drawn out and
overstayed its welcome early on. Maybe it was the black and white tone, or the fact that they weren’t
speaking English – yeah, sometimes I’m a lazy movie watcher and don’t want to read during my movies…
especially movies that are supposed to be ridiculously over the top.
“Zom-B-Movie” comes last and is written and directed by Joe Lynch.
“Zom-B-Movie” wraps up the drive-in scenes with a bang. It’s a no-holds-barred
ending that is perfect for this movie. Everything goes during this segment… you’ve got zombies
having sex, action, nudity – everything that you expected from a movie such as Chillerama, but never really got until
this closing sequence.
The Bottom Line: I expected more entertainment from such great writers/directors, but instead we get
two really great sequences with filler in-between. But it’s still a fun guilty please that would
make a great addition to a drunk evening with some friends.
