300

Not
many movies adapt well from books, graphic novels, or comic books. I’ll spoil my review by telling you that 300 may
very well be one of the best. This movie adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel made for an excellent cinematic
experience. Films that appear so good on the "big screen" in theaters often have a small failing when you see them at home
on DVD, but not this time. From the dialog, to the cinematography this film simply is "big screen". I firmly believe that
I could watch this on my 7 inch portable DVD player and still feel like I am watching it in a theater. I can’t even
begin to give credit for how well put together this film is.
I am sure that anyone who will see this film can see how well choreographed the battles are. It
is obvious how much training the actors went through, and the special effects were stunning, considering almost all of this
was shot indoors on a green screen. I want to point out something not everyone will admire: the gorgeous costuming and cinematography.
I encourage anyone to watch this move if for nothing else than to see how much work was put into making the Persian army appear
to come from countless different nations. Try to pay attention to how many shots are taken off of the main action in order
to broaden the spectacle of the epic battle.
I am not going to humor the numerous movie-goers that will complain that this movie does not stay
exactly within the lines of the novel. I will simply say that this is a great adaptation of Frank Miller’s work, and
an adaptation is the best a movie can be, there will never be a direct translation from book to movie. Frank Miller should
be proud that now he has two of his books translated into two incredible movies.
As I have made my opinion of this movie obvious I must also give my review to the DVD release.
I will be generous, however, since I was given the regular full screen edition and will not be able to mention the special
features of the 2-disc set. The regular DVD edition had all that was needed: good picture, sound, and I enjoyed the "Trick
r Treat" trailer.
I must say I never thought the death of so many could be a happy ending, but 300 proved me wrong.
