Interview with Paul McCoy of 12 Stones
April 18, 2003
by Tim Nydell

Do you think it was harder to get to where you are now because of the band's age?
Paul:  Everything happened so fast - it's finally starting to settle in.  I don't think it was any harder really.  Maybe the location made it harder.  Age might have helped out a little actually.

When the band was formed you really didn't know each other - how do you get along now?
Paul:  We get along great.  We're just like one big family.  We're out here for the same reasons.  When we're on the road everyone hangs out.  It's kind of like a moving home.

My favorite song is "The Way I Feel" - what were you going through when you wrote that song?
Paul:  "The Way I Feel" is a song that I wrote about having a real crappy day.  Whenever you sit around and feel like nothing you say or do makes any sense.  Just one of those songs.  You're having a bad day, but tomorrow's another day.  Just hang on.

If you could tour with any band, who would it be?
Paul:  We've already done some shows with Sevendust - and we're really into 311.  We like to tour with bands that have a lot of energy and believe what they say.

I read that you were a big Finger Eleven fan - how have they influenced you?
Paul:  I got a lot of my influences from Finger Eleven.  Also Silverchair - Pearl Jam... stuff like that.  I was just surprised that no one has ever heard of Finger Eleven.  As soon as they came out I was just blown away.

Do you have a new single that's coming out soon?
Paul:  Yea, "Crash" actually came out April first.  Hopefully it'll get a little bit more play.

What song are you most proud of?
Paul:  That's a good question.  "Running Out Of Pain" is one of my favorites.  It was written for a good friend of mine.

Do you have any songs written for the next album yet?
Paul:  We have about eight or nine new songs.

Are they any different?
Paul:  I think they're a little more mature.  We have had more time as a band to work together.  We're learned about each other - and learned how each of us writes.  It's more mature, but it's still the same - you'll be able to tell it's us.

What's your writing process like?
Paul:  We all work together - one person brings one part of the song... we all sit down together in one element.  We all sit down and listen.

Has your writing process changed since becoming a band?
Paul:  No, not really.  We're on the road so much we just sit down and pull out the guitars and just jam.

What is your favorite tattoo that you have?
Paul:  I'm actually building my left arm all the way up - so it's going to be one big piece.  One of my favorite pieces is on my back - it's my guardian angel.

What does the future hold for 12 Stones?
Paul:  Hopefully more of what we've done.  Keep doing what we love to do.

What is one question you guys hate being asked?
Paul:  I get asked if I'm in Evanescence.  Last night I was asked if Amy is my sister.  That was a new one.  There's not really any questions that we hate.  A lot of people don't understand that other people interview you too - you've done really good - you've have all original questions.  This is a very good interview.
